Quantifying Intensive and extensive margin adaptation responses to climate change: A study of California’s Residential Electricity Consumption
نویسنده
چکیده
Increased demand for cooling and decreased demand for heating in the built environment is one of the main anticipated modes of adaptation to higher temperatures due to climate change. California’s residential sector uses relatively little electricity for heating. It is therefore expected that the demand for electricity will increase at the intensive margin as households operate existing air conditioners more frequently. Further, in many regions there will be an additional extensive margin adjustment as households will install air conditioners where there currently are few. Using the majority of California’s residential electricity bills this paper provides reduced form estimates of the projected consumption impacts from the intensive and extensive margins separately using a two-stage method. It shows that accounting for capital investment leads to significantly higher projections of electricity consumption.

Estimating intensive and extensive margin adaptation to climate change from consumption data∗
The widespread rollout of air conditioning has resulted in massive positive impacts on human health in both developing and developed countries over the past century. A warming world will further increase demand for cooling in climates both through increased operation of existing air conditioners and the adoption of new ones. This paper provides an empirical approach to separately quantifying th...

This study simulates the impacts of higher temperatures resulting from anthropogenic climate change on residential electricity consumption for California. Flexible temperature response functions are estimated by climate zone, which allow for differential effects of days in different temperature bins on households' electricity consumption. The estimation uses a comprehensive household level data...
متن کاملEnergy Consumption Modeling in Residential Buildings
In recent years, the issue of energy consumption modeling techniques in the building sector has been widely considered by researchers and managers. Researches indicate that energy consumption in residential sector is one of the main parts of the total consumption. Moreover, the urban residence is supposed as a significant consumer of energy in every country and therefore a focus for energy cons...
متن کاملMeasuring Climatic Impacts on Energy Consumption: A Review of the Empirical Literature
This paper reviews the literature on the relationship between climate and the energy sector. In particular, we primarily discuss empirical papers published in peer-reviewed economics journals focusing on how climate affects energy expenditures and consumption. Climate will affect energy consumption by changing how consumers respond to short run weather shocks (the intensive margin) as well has ...

The main share of energy consumption in the country and more than a third of its loss is in residential use. Per capita, household electricity consumption is far from the world standard, and the existence of subsidies for energy carriers in Iran, and consequently their low prices, causes occupants to pay less attention to energy consumption. Due to the policy of eliminating subsidies, the effec...
